The 2020-21 year blur

Updated: Dec 22, 2022

The year that was…

And still is.

And it is still on everyone’s lips, mouths and noses.

What?

The pandemic, 2020-21, and the mask.

In that order

We must accept that 2020 was a blur and a blob and 31st December could not come fast enough. All of us spent the final hours in different ways. Some worked almost until midnight, others partied. Some others spent their time in prayer and some had a quiet time with family. Whatever we did or didn’t do, we all harboured a unanimous wish; to throw out 2020 with a thank you but no thank you, hoping that 2021 will somehow be different.

We waited with bated breath for the clock to strike twelve and when it did, the intoxicated (and the sober, I presume) among us threw caution and social distancing to the winds and hugged one another in jubilation and celebration.

“It’s over!” “2020 is over!”

If we didn’t proclaim it to the world, we all thought it. January 1st came and went and now we are in the second week of the new year. A lot of us are still working from home, meeting via Zoom calls and exchanging muffled happy new year greetings. We are still wearing funny masks and barely tolerating our own breath. There is still a raging pandemic, a curfew and a lockdown in varying degrees across the world. And, our breath is still bated. So what has changed in 2021?

It is true that some things have changed since the beginning of last year. The sky for instance has changed from blue to a smoky grey. The crystal clear horizon is now enveloped in smog fog also known as smfog and the AQI is through the roof. So now, apart from breathing in the virus particles, we can also inhale toxic pollutants, all of which is airborne. If you think about it, our living conditions have now become a smog, fog, smfog filled blur, blob, blur. We can neither see the end of the pandemic nor the line on the horizon. Either way the mask breath is here to stay and we cannot breathe easy. Not yet at least. So while we are here and eagerly awaiting the vaccine, let’s welcome a new, new normal!

Also, covid now has babies. So there’s that.

Stay safe. Wear a mask. Rise above your mask breath. We love you.
